MR B. J. GOODWIN'S MEMORIES

My wife and I, on our honeymoon in Southsea, remember seing " Yana" in the 1950's on Southsea pier, in a show called "South-sea bubble" with Bob Monkhouse and the west country comedian Billy Burden. it was a wonderful show and"Yana" was brilliant.

ALBIE'S  (ALBIE JD) MEMORIES OF YANA

I had a small diary which had the days on one side of the page and black and white photographs of famous people on the opposite page, it must have been about 1960 when I was eleven.  There were also a couple of sentences about each person. Sadly, one was of Michael Holiday who said one of his hobbies was 'having a good worry' - as you know he committed suicide. I remember a debate whether the I'm Goin' Well I'm Goin' Shell' song was sung by him or Crosby. Ronnie Caroll I think was included. But of course I would never forget Yana: even as an eleven year old lad, I was smittten by her astounding beauty.

On a recent Radio 2 programme on George Formby, Yana was mentioned as accompanying George Formby at public events after his wife died.

CHRIS WOODWARD, WITH YANA AND TOMMY COOPER

This item below is with many thanks to Chris Woodward. Chris has also sent in the picture below of him with Tommy Cooper and Yana. Chris has kindly sent in the picture and information below about the time he worked with Yana in Jersey. More information from Chris is shown on the YANA MEMORIES (2) page:-

Following yesterdays Yuri Gagarin story, I remembered the number plate YG1 that was on the car that met him at Heathrow. On searching the web I just stumbled upon your excellent website relating to Yana. I worked with her on a show inn Jersey and am attaching a photo from the mid 1960’s. I can date it exactly if you need it.

Also, I have just had published the definitive history of The London Palladium:

where I do mention Yana I wondered if you would consider attaching the Jeremy Mills link above to your website.

Here is the link to the page that mentions her.....

and if you would like the photo of the three of us to add to your website happy to help. I’ll also search for the programme and Souvenir Programme too if it helps.

JOHN BUTTERS: MEMORIES

Here are some memories from John Butters, formerly from 112 Squadron. Thank you, John, and for telling me about how Yana brought the house down at RAF Bruggen in 1955:

"Yana.....oh how I remember her!

She came out to entertain our air bases in Western Germany in 1955.
I saw her superb performance at RAF Bruggen which was home to three fighter squadrons.
She had a superb voice and such a sexy delivery.....she brought the house down. We howled for more and kept her up on stage way past her scheduled time.
Many of us were bewitched by her. She left so many happy airmen behind."

CARL  D. McVEY REMEMBERS YANA

Here are some great memories from Carl, when he met Yana in Cyprus in 1958:-

I did get to know Yana briefly when she came to Cyprus, I think around 1958, to entertain the combined forces here, i.e.  R.A.F,  ( my group ), the Army, and Navy, and a small detachment of USAF. I was in a special section of RAF intelligence mainly concerned with aerial photography and had the means to take photo's of her. Because of this we were able to spend some time together albeit for a short period during her tour. I found her to be beautiful, very intelligent plus great company and we had quite a few laughs together.

Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to the photo's I had taken as when my mother died they just "disappeared", which is a great shame as she was very proud of them showing us together.

                                      Thanks again for the memories.

                                      Carl D. McVey.
